Since 2002, Emergency Shelter Grant monies (from HUD) have been allocated to Bethany House by the City of Laredo for distribution for past-due utility and rent bills or mortgage bills under strict federal guidelines. This direct assistance enables families to stay in their homes while their situation becomes more stable. Critical guidelines require that: a sudden reduction of income occur in the household during recent time and that there be a reasonable likelihood that the household can remain up to date with financial obligations once the assistance is provided.
Applications are accepted on a first-come first serve basis only while funding is available. Since October 2009, Homelessness Prevention and Rapid Re-housing (HPRP) monies (from HUD) have been allocated to Bethany House by the City of Laredo to assist and prevent individuals and familes from becoming homeless and help those who are experiencing homelessness to be quickly re-housed and stabilized. In order to receive assistance or services funded by HPRP, individuals and families - whether homeless or housed - must meet at least the minimum federal criteria.
Additionally, when funding is available through FEMA, Bethany House provides utility assistance to qualified households which have fallen behind on their bills for circumstances beyond their control.
